During 1988 a large mining company requested that Oscillating Systems do an independent study on premature v-belt failures.

• OST found that the following were the reasons for v-belts only lasting
3 weeks – 18 months instead of 3 years as given by the v-belt suppliers:

• V-belts were not kept at the specified tension through-out their life.

• Misalignment of v-belts.

Common problems

• Belt not maintaining tension that is needed as stated by the manufacturer, thus the belt would slip losing arc of contact. This will result in loss in the system efficiency and damage to the system.

• Vibration of the belt must go somewhere. This will bring failure to bearings or structure.

• Existing Systems, such as slide rails; bolts and nuts; threaded bars, were not user friendly, and due to harsh corrosive environments would take time to loosen and re-tighten.

• Every time after the belts were re-tensioned, the motor was set in a misaligned position.

• No maintenance program to re-tension v-belts at regular intervals. Only fixed when slip noise occurs or when v-belts snapped.

Belt changes

Belt changes are done in one fifth of the time when using the STM Base. I.e. It takes 80% longer to do belt changes on a traditional system. With the STM Base you have no need to worry about rust or misalignment. Once aligned always aligned

This can be done at least 4 times a year.
